Light Quality

The DS162 features Ikelite’s proprietary circular flashtube and soft white powder-coated reflector, producing a beam quality that professionals recognise as ideal for wide-angle underwater photography.

Constructed from a custom ABS-PC blend, this strobe is inherently corrosion-proof and over 237 g (½ lb) lighter than aluminium-bodied models.

The DS162 beam is engineered for optimal spread and colour temperature without needing a light-reducing diffuser. For broader coverage, the optional Dome Diffuser (#4069.2) increases spread with only a half-stop loss in apparent brightness.

Ergonomics

Adjust your lighting quickly and easily without taking your eyes off your subject. The large, click-stop dials offer intuitive, tactile control – ideal for fast-paced underwater shooting.

These oversized dials are even more glove-friendly thanks to an increased height and surface area. A slide lock helps prevent accidental activation when stored or travelling.

High Performance Power

Your strobe’s output is only as consistent as its power source. Off-the-shelf batteries lack the low impedance required for rapid recycle times. Even high-end AA rechargeables lose performance under strain.

Ikelite's custom NiMH rechargeable cells ensure high frame-rate reliability from the first to last shot. These industrial-grade cells outperform both alkaline and lithium batteries in real-world underwater conditions, including temperature swings and long-term storage. Many users report dependable performance beyond 10–15 years, despite a nominal lifespan of 5 years.

The battery pack attaches securely via a tool-free toggle lock, eliminating the need for O-ring lubrication and reducing flood risk. The strobe front is compatible with older NiMH Battery Packs (#4066.5) and the DS230 Battery Pack (#40066BK).
